Kisumu is a port city in Kisumu County in the republic of Kenya 1,131m {3,711 ft.} with a population of 409,928 according to 2009 census.

The port was founded in 1901 as the main inland terminal of the Uganda railway and named port Florence. Although trade stagnated in the 1980s and 1990s, it is again growing around oil exports.

Kisumu literally means a place of barter trade “sumo”


By road: it is located 355 km north of Nairobi.

By air: the flight from Nairobi takes less than an hour to the lake side city of Kisumu. there are regular scheduled flights to Kisumu international airport.

Water: Kisumu is linked by ferry with Kendu bay, Homa bay and mbita though there has been a decline in ferry services.


By rail: there is a rail network to Kisumu from Nairobi though it is not in use as it used to be in the late 1990s.
